How MatchPay works
MatchPay describes itself as a "peer-to-peer credit trading marketplace that automatically matches buyers and sellers"1. At a sportsbook, your deposit becomes an Order to buy betting credit from a player who wants to cash out, and your withdrawal becomes an Offer to sell credit to a player who wants to deposit. The real money moves between the two of you through an app such as Venmo, Zelle or PayPal; the sportsbook only moves credit from one account to the other2. MatchPay credit cannot be sent to a bank account1.
Before your first trade
- Check you are allowed to play. Bovada excludes 19 states and DC; Ozoon excludes the US and four provinces3,4. Check your state's laws as well.
- Set up every payment app first. MatchPay asks you to have each trade method set up before starting a trade, and more apps means more matches5,6.
- Use your own accounts. Never pay from an account that is not registered on MatchPay; if you do, MatchPay cannot help1.
- Expect two checks. Sign-up needs SMS validation of your phone and an email link1,7.
- Pick the ID once. Your MatchPay ID is case-sensitive and cannot be changed later6,1.
- Decide about the welcome bonus. MatchPay deposits do not earn it at either sportsbook6,8. See what changes for bettors.
Deposit: buying credit to bet
- Start in the sportsbook's cashier. Profile icon, Deposit, MatchPay. First time only, click "Join Now" and link a new MatchPay ID6.
- Create an Order. Enter the amount and tick every app you can pay with, then Continue. From there you can edit it with the pencil icon or cancel it with the "x"6.
- Get matched. MatchPay notifies a seller by email or text and keeps cycling through sellers until one responds6.
- Pay inside the window. Send the money to the handle shown in the trade chat, by the app the trade names, and mark it sent. All trade talk has to stay inside MatchPay1.
- Seller confirms. Once they see the money, they confirm, both of you are told the trade is complete, and the credit appears in your sportsbook balance6.
The trade clock
Once a match is found, each step has a time limit. MatchPay's FAQ sets them out: 5 minutes to accept or decline the match, 8 minutes for the payer to send and verify the transfer, and 5 minutes for the receiver to confirm the money arrived1. If confirmation is slow, MatchPay asks you to allow 20 more minutes before opening a dispute, because the payment app itself can be delayed1.
The rules on running out of time are not quite consistent. MatchPay's best practices say the "I have sent the credits" and "I have received credits" buttons stay available after time runs out5; Bovada's dispute page says a trade where nothing was shared or confirmed when the timer expires is cancelled automatically9. Act inside the window and you avoid finding out which applies.
Withdraw: selling your winnings
- Request a MatchPay withdrawal in the sportsbook's cashier. The amount leaves your balance and, once approved, is held in reserve for you to sell10.
- Create an Offer in MatchPay for all of it or part of it, and choose the apps you can receive on10.
- Accept or decline the buyer within 5 minutes. You can still back out at this point: a trade can be cancelled as long as you have not accepted the match1.
- Wait for the money, then confirm. Check the app itself, not a screenshot, and confirm only once the money is available to use1.
Once a trade is under way, the trade method cannot be changed and the Offer cannot be edited1. Pending Offers can be edited or cancelled from MatchPay's dashboard under "active offers"1.

Limits, fees and timing
| MatchPay FAQ | Bovada | Ozoon | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Per trade or transaction | $10 to $2,0001 | $10 to $2,000 each way11,12 | $10 to $3,000 each way13,14 |
| Withdrawals | Not stated | 2 per calendar day12 | 2 per 24 hours14 |
| Deposit attempts | Not stated | May be capped at 3 a day6 | May be capped at 3 a day8 |
| Sportsbook fee | Not stated | None15 | Not stated |
| Speed once matched | About 18 minutes of timers1 | "Instant"12 | Not stated |
Payment apps can still charge their own fees. Bovada notes that "some payment providers may charge additional fees to process your funds", which it does not collect16. Older pages also quote different limits: Bovada's best-practices page still says $20 to $1,000 per trade5. Go by the cashier.
Troubleshooting a stuck MatchPay trade
| What happened | What MatchPay or the sportsbook says to do |
|---|---|
| No match is found | Review your details, add more trade methods, or go back to the sportsbook and change the amount.6,10 |
| You paid, but the seller has not confirmed | Give them an extra 20 minutes, since payment apps can lag. Still pending? Open a dispute with "Report a Problem".1 |
| Your PayPal payment shows "Pending" | Cancel it and resend as "Friends & Family" or "Gift". "Goods & Services" payments get held by PayPal.5 |
| Zelle or Chime says "Pending" or "Processing" | The other side has not received it yet. Zelle trades started at a weekend complete on the next business day.5 |
| Apple Pay shows "Pending" | Do not complete the trade until the payment is accepted in Apple Pay.5 |
| The other user wants you to pay a different handle or app | Cancel the trade. Never send money to details that were not shared in the trade chat.1 |
| Someone in the chat says they are a moderator | Ignore them. Trades are only between the two people involved; moderators never step in.1 |
| You clicked "I have sent the credits" by mistake | Write "please cancel, credits have not been sent" in the trade chat.5 |
| The timer ran out while you were checking your app | The "I have sent the credits" and "I have received credits" buttons still work after time runs out. But if nothing was shared or confirmed, the trade cancels itself.5,9 |
| You paid from an account not registered on MatchPay | Contact your payment app. MatchPay says it cannot help with that.1 |
| Your third withdrawal of the day is stuck | It stays pending until 24 hours after your first MatchPay withdrawal request.10 |
| You cannot start another deposit today | Depending on account status, MatchPay deposits can be capped at three attempts per day.6 |
| Your withdrawal was cancelled and the money returned | Every deposit has to be wagered in full before you withdraw.16 |
| You want a withdrawal back in your betting account | Redeposit it from MatchPay, if at least $20 is in your "Available Credit".17 |
| You want MatchPay credit in your bank account | Not possible. MatchPay credit only leaves through a trade with another user.1 |
| You forgot your MatchPay password | Use "Forgot Password"; MatchPay emails a reset link (check spam).1 |
If you need to open a dispute
Use "Report a Problem" inside the trade. The trade and your chat transcript go to MatchPay support, which decides "at the sole discretion of the MatchPay support team" in about 48 hours, and "all resolutions are final"9. Do not dispute with your payment app first: MatchPay says it cannot resolve its dispute until the app's dispute is closed5.
MatchPay may ask for these, in JPEG or PDF, with the app's logo and web address visible1:
- A screenshot of your full activity log in the app (for Zelle, your bank's), from the day before the trade to today, with every transaction visible.
- A screenshot of the open transaction, showing its status and the other user's details (for PayPal, the recipient's email).
- For a chargeback, all of the above plus the notice your payment app sent you.
MatchPay's customer service runs a 24-hour live chat, and general questions go to support@matchpay.app, with replies in about 48 hours1.
Risks to weigh
- You are paying a stranger. Venmo's user agreement says it "should only be used to transact with people you know and trust"18.
- Little purchase protection. MatchPay tells PayPal users to send "Friends & Family" or "Gift"5, which is a personal payment, not a protected purchase.
- Your app's rules still apply. PayPal lists gambling, including sports betting, among activities needing its pre-approval, and only where the activity is legal for operator and customer19. Read your app's terms before you use it for this.
- Payments can be pulled back. Cash App's terms let it reverse a payment it believes "should not have been made"20, and MatchPay's dispute process covers chargebacks1.
- Disputes are MatchPay's call, and its decision is final9.
- Impostors. Scammers pose as sportsbook staff and ask you to cancel a withdrawal and send funds to a username; Bovada says it will never ask that21.
- Offshore balance. Your money sits with an offshore operator under its own terms, which can void a balance accessed from a restricted state3.
If any of this is a reason to bet less, or not at all, that is a fine outcome. The National Problem Gambling Helpline is free and confidential: call or text 1-800-MY-RESET22.
